📍 South Coast of Crimea
A narrow strip between the mountains and the sea, home of famous Muscats.
The South Coast of Crimea is a narrow strip of land between the Crimean Mountains and the Black Sea. The mountains shelter it from cold winds and the sea softens winter. Summers are hot, and the berries gather plenty of sugar. This is where the fame of Crimean Muscats was born.
The South Coast has many well-known places: Massandra, Livadia, Krasny Kamen near Gurzuf, Ai-Danil, Alushta and Malorechenske. Kokur Bilyi, Pinot Gris, Muscats and other grapes grow here. The Massandra cellars are known for their collection of old wines. Vineyards lie on slopes where stone and poor soil push the vine to produce concentrated berries.
The South Coast belongs to Crimea, a part of Ukraine, and to Ukrainian winemaking. Visitors come for tastings and cellar tours. Dessert and fortified wines from here have long been prized. As with any alcohol, they are best drunk in moderation, in small portions. The coast is also popular with travellers who come for the sea and the mountains.
