π Pinot Gris
A white wine grape with pinkish-grey skin, a mutation of Pinot Noir.
Pinot Gris is a white wine grape with pinkish-grey skin. It arose as a mutation of Pinot Noir. A mutation is a spontaneous change in a vine that gave the berries another colour. Wine from Pinot Gris can be white, and with long skin contact it becomes orange wine.
The grape is loved in Alsace in France, in Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Veneto in Italy, in Baden in Germany, and also in the Mosel, the Pfalz and Badacsony in Hungary. In Italy it is called Pinot Grigio. Alsace Pinot Gris makes both dry and sweet wines. Many Alsace grands crus, such as Brand, FrΕhn, Mambourg and Sommerberg, allow Pinot Gris.
The taste depends on the place. In cool areas the wine is light and fresh, in warm ones it is fuller and softer. Freisamer, Deckrot and Freiburg 523-52 are linked to it by pedigree.
The grape is not very acidic, so the wine is soft. It is often served with fish, poultry and light dishes.
