🍇 Tavkveri
A red grape from Kartli, Georgia, making light red and rosé wines.
Tavkveri is a red grape from Kartli in Georgia. It gives light red and rosé wines. It has long grown in the centre of Georgia.
The main places where it grows are in Kartli, notably Kvemo Kartli and the Bolnisi area. Summers are warm and nights cool here. The berries gain enough colour, and the wine keeps freshness. Red Tavkveri is usually light, with cherry and berry notes, gentle tannins and pleasant acidity. Rosé wines are also made from it.
Sometimes the wine is made in the traditional way in qvevri, and then it is fuller and darker. But today modern, fresh versions are more common.
Tavkveri shows the variety of Georgian winemaking. Besides well-known grapes like Saperavi, Georgia has many local grapes that remain little known. As with any alcohol, the wine should be drunk in moderation. The grape is considered one of the old Georgian varieties, and its wines are often found from small producers in regional shops and restaurants.
