Georgian wine is the wine and winemaking of Georgia. It is one of the oldest winemaking traditions in the world: wine has been made here for about eight thousand years. A special method is ageing in qvevri, large clay vessels buried in the ground. The qvevri tradition is on the UNESCO list of intangible heritage.
The main wine areas are Kakheti in the east, where most of the wine is made, Kartli, Imereti, Racha, Lechkhumi, Samegrelo, Guria, Adjara and Meskheti. Each has its own wines and customs. Skin contact plays an important role in Georgian wine, especially in Kakheti: in qvevri white grapes ferment with skins and seeds, giving amber wines.
More than five hundred local grape varieties are known in Georgia. The best known are the red Saperavi and the white Rkatsiteli. Local varieties include Ojaleshi, Usakhelouri, Mtsvivani Rachuli, Tkbili Yurdzeni and many others. For guests, a feast with wine is an important part of the culture, with toasts spoken at the table.
