Also known as: milk tea

England, Asia.

Tea with milk is a drink of brewed tea to which milk is added. Tea with milk is drunk in many countries. In Britain, most tea is drunk with cold milk. That is why it is simply called “tea” there, with no extra word. Usually it is strong black tea with a little milk added.

Asia has many drinks of its own. In India and Pakistan, “chai” almost always means tea with milk. Masala chai is brewed with milk, sugar and spices. In Hong Kong, milk tea appeared back in British times. Local people found it weak, so they began using strong Ceylon tea and unsweetened condensed milk. In Mongolia people drink suutei tsai, a salty tea with milk. In Central Asia, tea with milk is poured into small bowls called piala.

Milk makes tea softer and less bitter. It cools the drink a little and makes it more filling.
