🥣 Breakfast cereal
Also known as: cereal, cornflakes
Cereal with milk.
Breakfast cereal is a ready-made grain breakfast that is usually eaten with cold milk poured over it. It is made from corn, wheat, oats or rice. The grain is cooked, flattened and dried or toasted.
The first cold grain breakfast was invented by the American James Caleb Jackson in 1863. His product was called “Granula”. It had to be soaked overnight, and it did not catch on. Corn flakes were patented by Dr John Harvey Kellogg, and they went on sale in 1895. In 1906 his brother William Kellogg started his own company. Around 1900 the Swiss doctor Maximilian Bircher-Benner invented muesli, a mix of oat flakes, fruit and nuts.
Cereal stays crunchy until milk is poured on. So the milk is added just before eating. Milk makes this breakfast more filling, because it has protein and calcium. Cereal is also eaten with yogurt or kefir.
