📍 Tenerife
The largest wine island, with five zones.
Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands and the largest wine island of the archipelago. It belongs to Spain and lies in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa. The volcano Teide rises over the island, and the soils are volcanic. The island has five wine zones with protected names: Abona, Valle de la Orotava, Tacoronte-Acentejo, Ycoden-Daute-Isora and Valle de Güímar. Vineyards grow from sea level up to 1,500 metres and higher. Vines are often trained into long braided trunks that creep along the ground and protect the berries from wind. The main grapes are red Listán Negro and white Listán Blanco, also known as Palomino. Wines are light and fresh; reds are often made by carbonic maceration, whites dry and aromatic. The island never knew phylloxera, so many vines grow on their own roots and are very old. Tenerife belongs to Spanish wine and to the Canary Islands. The island's wines are drunk mostly by locals and tourists, and little is exported.
