🍇 Touriga Nacional

Grape variety ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 4 Updated:

Portugal's finest red grape, the backbone of Port and dry Douro wines.

Touriga Nacional is a red grape variety from Portugal. Many consider it the country's best red grape. It gives dark, rich wine with aromas of violet, black berries and flowers.

The berries are small with thick skins. Yields are low, but the wine is concentrated, high in tannin and colour. The variety is well adapted to heat and dry summers. It is the basis of Port and of dry red wines from the Douro valley. It is also grown in the Dão area, in the Alentejo, the Tejo and elsewhere.

The variety has relatives: it is a parent of Touriga Franca, which is also important for Port. Touriga Nacional is in the list of grape varieties and belongs to fortified wines. Besides Portugal it is planted in Australia and South Africa, but it makes the strongest impression at home. Wines with it age well.
