π Touriga Franca
A red grape from the Douro Valley, one of the main varieties for Port.
Touriga Franca is a red grape from the Douro valley in Portugal. It is one of the main grapes for port. It covers large areas because it tolerates heat well and ripens reliably.
Wine from Touriga Franca is aromatic, with the smell of flowers and red berries and soft tannins. This sets it apart from the denser and darker Touriga Nacional, with which it is often blended. In blends it adds floral shades and freshness. The grape also goes into dry Douro reds, not only fortified wines.
The variety comes from Portugal and is closely tied to this region: it grows in Baixo Corgo and Cima Corgo, in different parts of the Douro river valley. It is related to several other Portuguese varieties, including Mourisco Tinto and Touriga Nacional. It is one of the symbols of Portuguese wine. If a port or red Douro label names grapes, this one often appears.
