📍 Valul lui Traian
The south-west of the country along the ancient Trajan's Wall, mostly red wines.
Valul lui Traian is a wine region in southwestern Moldova. The name means "Trajan's Wall": the name of an ancient earthen rampart running through the south of the country. The region lies in the south of the country, not far from the border with Romania and Ukraine.
The climate is warm with hot summers, so there are more red wines. The main districts are Ciumai, Comrat, Tigheci, Cimișlia, Taraclia, Ceadîr-Lunga, Tomai and Cahul. Vineyards lie on gentle slopes and plains.
The grapes grown include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Fetească Neagră and Saperavi. Red wines here are full, with aromas of black berries and soft tannin. White wines exist too, but are in the minority.
Valul lui Traian is one of the zones of Moldovan wine. The country is known for its huge underground cellars and winemaking tradition, and this region adds more southern, rich reds to the picture.
