🍇 Fetească Neagră
A red wine grape from Moldova and Romania, a source of local pride.
Fetească Neagră is a red wine grape, a local pride of Romania and Moldova. The name in Romanian means "black maiden".
The grape grows in Romania on the Moldavian hills (in the areas of Iași, Cotești and Odobești), in Dealu Mare, Murfatlar, Banat, Muntenia and Oltenia, in Segarcea and other places. It is grown in Moldova too. The vine gives dark berries. The wine is deep in colour, with notes of plum, cherry and spice, and soft tannins. It suits ageing in oak.
Fetească Neagră is an old local variety, and Romanians regard it as one of their main red grapes. It makes both light and aged wines. It pairs well with meat, sausages and cheese. It is sometimes compared with other dark grapes, but it has its own taste and character, reflecting the place where it grows.
