📍 Codru
The wooded centre of the country, home to the underground wine cities of Cricova and Mileștii Mici.
Codru is a wooded upland in the centre of Moldova. The word "codru" means "forest" in Romanian. The hills are covered with oak woods, and vineyards lie between them. The area is regarded as one of the main wine regions of the country. The name is protected as a geographical indication.
The climate is moderate and warm, and the forest softens the winds. Among whites, Fetească Albă, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling grow here, and among reds Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The wines are fresh and aromatic, and the reds are full. The area is near the capital, Chișinău, so there are many wineries.
Codru's special fame is tied to its underground wine cities. In Cricova and Mileștii Mici, streets run underground through former limestone workings where millions of bottles are stored. Constant coolness and humidity suit ageing. The region also holds Romănești, Răzeni, Nisporeni, Orhei, Călărași and other wine places. Codru is the heart of Moldovan winemaking.
