📍 Vipava Valley
A valley with the bora wind and local grapes.
The Vipava Valley is a wine zone in western Slovenia, in the Primorska region, in the valley of the Vipava river near the Italian border. It is part of Slovenian Primorska. The valley lies at the foot of the Karst limestone plateau and the Trnovo Forest hills. It is famous for the strong cold bora wind (“burja” in Slovenian), which blows down the valley and dries the grapes, lowering the risk of fungal diseases.
The climate combines Mediterranean and Alpine influences. Soils are flysch (marl and sandstone) and limestone.
Local grapes include Zelen, Pinela and Klarnica. Zelen gives light dry wines, Pinela aromatic ones with a light spice. Rebula (Ribolla Gialla), shared with Italy's neighbouring Collio, plus Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are also grown.
Winegrowing here is old, and wine is part of the local way of life. Vipava wines go well with cheese, ham and fish. To the west lie Italy's Collio and Carso, and to the north the Alps. Vipava whites go well with fish, prosciutto and cheese, and reds with grilled meat and game. The valley is also known for its villages and castles, and wine here is inseparable from local food: dry-cured ham, cheese and fresh bread. For a traveller it is a pleasant mix of landscape and taste.
