The west of the country, by Italy and the sea.

Primorska (the Littoral) is a wine region in western Slovenia, on the Italian border, by the Adriatic Sea. It includes Goriška Brda, the Vipava Valley, Kras (the Karst) and Slovenian Istria. The climate is Mediterranean, but with cold mountain winds such as the famous burja in the Vipava Valley.

Goriška Brda is a continuation of the Italian Collio zone, and the border runs right through the vineyards. The main grapes are the white Rebula (Ribolla Gialla), Merlot, Refošk (Refosco), Zelen and Pinela (in the Vipava Valley), Malvazija and Cabernet. The red Teran is made on the Karst, where the soil is red earth (terra rossa) over limestone.

Orange wines are widespread in the region: white wine fermented with the skins, which gives it an amber colour. Sparkling wines are made too.

Primorska is one of the best-known parts of Slovenian winemaking, lying next to Italian Friuli and Croatian Istria, and many vineyards are shared between countries. Rebula and orange wines suit fish, cheese and simple appetisers. The name Primorska on a label shows that the grapes grew in this very area, which makes it easy to look for similar wines.
