🍇 Ribolla Gialla
A white grape from the Italy–Slovenia border, known for "orange" wines.
Ribolla Gialla is a white grape from the border of Italy and Slovenia. It grows in Friuli, especially in the Collio and Colli Orientali del Friuli zones, and on the other side of the border in Goriška Brda and the Vipava Valley in Slovenia. There it is called Rebula.
The grape is known as the base of orange wines. The grapes are left to ferment with their skins, and the white wine gains an amber colour, tannins and a complex taste. But Ribolla is also made in an ordinary white style: fresh and mineral, with citrus and flowers. Sparkling wines are made from it too.
The grape has grown here for a very long time and was mentioned in the 13th century. In recent years it has become a symbol of the revival of local winemaking. Ribolla Gialla is tied to Italian wine and, in particular, to the Rosazzo and Collio appellations. It pairs well with fish, vegetables and ham, while aged amber wines suit richer dishes.
