🗺️ Slovenian wine
The country's wine and winemaking: regions, grapes and appellations.
Slovenian wine is the wine of a small country in Central Europe, at the meeting of the Alps, the Adriatic and the Pannonian plain. Slovenia belongs to the wines of Europe and is a member of the European Union. Grapes have been grown here since ancient times. The country is divided into three wine regions: Podravje in the north-east, Posavje in the south-east and the Primorska in the west by the border with Italy. In Podravje white varieties grow, and in Primorska both white and red wines are made. Local varieties include Zelen, Pinela, Teran, Klarnica, Ranfol and Šmarnica. Blaufränkisch and Portugieser also occur. Slovenia's special fame is tied to orange wine: white that ferments with its skins. Some wines are made in amphorae, clay vessels, as in neighbouring Friuli in Italy. These traditions returned in recent decades. The country is small, so wines are produced mostly for the domestic market. Local farms are small and family-run, and wine can be tasted right at the producer.
