A Viennese field blend of at least three white varieties from one vineyard.

Wiener Gemischter Satz is a Viennese wine made from a mix of at least three white grape varieties grown in the same vineyard. The words "gemischter Satz" mean "mixed planting". The varieties grow together in the same rows, are picked together and pressed together.

This method is called a field blend. It is very old: once different varieties were planted in one vineyard so that something would ripen in any year. Vienna kept this tradition, and now it is a valued wine. Each variety adds something: one gives freshness, another aroma, a third body.

The wine is usually light, young and fresh, and drunk in its first year. It is served in Viennese wine taverns called Heuriger, often straight from the barrel of the new vintage. Gemischter Satz belongs to Austrian wine and is closely tied to Vienna itself, one of the few capitals with real vineyards inside the city. For Vienna it is a calling card.
