🍷 New wine
Wine from the new harvest, drunk in its first autumn and winter.
New wine is wine of the new harvest that is drunk in the first autumn and winter. It is not aged for years: it is fresh, often light and fruity. Sometimes such wine is sold while it is still fermenting, when it is cloudy and slightly sweet.
New wine has different names. In Austria it is served in Heurigen, small wine taverns, and is called Heuriger. In Germany people drink Federweisser in autumn, partly fermented must. France has nouveau, the best-known example being Beaujolais Nouveau. The Czech Republic, Slovakia and Ukraine also have their own young autumn wines, made and sold right after the harvest.
Festivals are linked to new wine. For example, St Martin's Day, celebrated on 11 November, is in many countries the time when the new wine is opened. Close by is the Gemischter Satz, the Viennese mixed vineyard planting, which supplies wines for the Heurigen.
New wine is not usually kept for long: it is best drunk during the winter. As with any alcohol, it should be drunk in moderation.
