The country's wine and winemaking: regions, grapes and appellations.

Austrian wine is the wine of a country with a long tradition of grape growing in Central Europe. The vineyards lie in the east: in Lower Austria, Burgenland, Styria and in Vienna itself. These and other states of the country belong to the wines of Europe. The main grape is Grüner Veltliner, white, fresh, with a peppery note. Among reds, Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch and Sankt Laurent are known. Austria has many varieties of its own, such as Zierfandler, Rotgipfler, Rössler and Neuburger. Riesling is also widely grown. Austrian wines are divided into quality classes. There is the DAC system, wines named for a place, and Prädikat wines by sugar level, such as Strohwein or Ausbruch. In Vienna wine is made from several varieties together, a style called Wiener Gemischter Satz. The country is small, but the styles vary: from dry whites to sweet wines from noble rot by Lake Neusiedl.
