📍 Vienna
A capital with vineyards inside the city and Heuriger wine taverns.
Vienna is one of the few European capitals with real vineyards inside the city limits, covering a few hundred hectares. They lie on the slopes of the Vienna Woods in the north and west of the city and in the south. Famous districts include Grinzing, Nussdorf, Nussberg and Kahlenberg. Tram stops and houses stand beside the vines, so wine is part of city life here.
Vienna is known for the “Heuriger” tradition: taverns where winemakers pour their own young wine and serve snacks. The owner hangs a branch by the entrance to show that it is open.
The best-known calling card is Wiener Gemischter Satz, a white wine from several grapes planted together on one plot and harvested and pressed at the same time. This blended wine received the higher DAC designation in 2013. Besides it, Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Pinot Blanc and the red Zweigelt are made.
For comparison with its neighbours: north of the city lie Wagram and the Weinviertel, to the south the Thermenregion and Carnuntum, and to the west the Vienna Woods with their dense forests.
