📍 Attica (Mesogeia)
A plain east of Athens.
Attica (Mesogeia) is the plain east of Athens in Greece. The name Mesogeia means "the middle land". It is one of the oldest wine areas in the country, and vineyards have grown here for many centuries. The climate is hot and dry, with mild winters.
The main grape of Attica is Savatiano, a white variety that copes well with heat and drought. It makes most of the wines of the area. It is also the base of retsina, a wine with pine resin. Resin from the Aleppo pine was once added to wine to help it keep longer, and later people grew used to the taste.
Attica has several places with their own retsina names: Koropi, Markopoulo, Peania, Pikermi, Spata and Pallini. They are all suburbs of Athens, where vineyards survive among buildings. Mesogeia belongs to the region of Central Greece and Attica. It shows how a city and wine can live side by side.
