🥃 Bardstown
Town in Nelson County, Kentucky (USA), known as the bourbon capital of the world: 11 distilleries within 16 miles, Heaven Hill and Barton 1792, and a bourbon festival since 1991.
Bardstown is a town in Nelson County, Kentucky (USA), which calls itself the «bourbon capital of the world»: the organisers of the Kentucky Bourbon Festival use the phrase Bourbon Capital of the World as a registered trademark. According to the tourism commission, 11 distilleries operate within 16 miles of Court Square.
History. The settlement appeared around 1780, and local sources call it the second-oldest town in Kentucky. According to local tradition, bourbon has been made here since 1776, and in the early 19th century more than 26 distilleries worked in the county. About 200 historic buildings survive in the town centre.
Distilleries. The best-known local company is Heaven Hill: it was founded in Bardstown in 1935, and the Shapira family still runs it; its bourbons include Evan Williams and Elijah Craig. Today Heaven Hill distils at the Bernheim distillery in Louisville, while its Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience centre is in Bardstown. Barton 1792, founded in 1879, is the oldest active distillery in the town; since 2009 it has belonged to the Sazerac Company.
Festival. The Kentucky Bourbon Festival began in 1991 as a single evening of tasting and dinner; now it runs for several days every September, and the festival lists more than 70 distilleries and over 200 brands. Under US law, bourbon matures in new charred oak barrels.
Why it matters to you. The town name on a bottle or in a tour description shows the place, not the quality or the age: age and maturity are shown by the «straight» designation and the age statement on the label. Tastings at distilleries involve strong alcohol, so do not drive afterwards. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.
