🍇 Bastardo Magarachskii
A red grape bred at the Magarach Institute in Yalta, Crimea, Ukraine.
Bastardo Magarachskii is a red wine grape bred in Crimea, Ukraine. It was created at the Magarach Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking in Yalta. The parents of the variety are Bastardo and Saperavi.
The name Magarach comes from the institute, which was founded in 1828 and still works today. The grape grows well on the southern coast of Crimea, where it is warm and summers are long. The berries gather a lot of sugar, so strong and dessert wines are made from it, including fortified ones, as well as dry reds.
The wine is dark and full, with aromas of plum, cherry and dried fruit. It ages well. The grape belongs to Ukrainian wine and to the red varieties bred by scientists. It is an example of breeding: a new variety suited to a particular climate was obtained from an old variety and another one.
Bastardo Magarachskii shows that in Crimea, which is part of Ukraine, there is a long-standing school of viticulture. Alcohol is for adults.
