🍇 Bastardo
A red grape from France's Jura, where it is called Trousseau; in Portugal it goes into Port.
Bastardo is a red grape variety. In the French Jura it is called Trousseau, and in Portugal it is known as Bastardo. It is thought to come from the Jura but reached Portugal long ago.
In the Jura it makes light red wines with pale colour and soft tannins. They go into Arbois, Côtes du Jura and Macvin du Jura. In Portugal Bastardo is one of the grapes used for Port, and it grows in the Douro valley. It is also grown on Madeira.
The variety has relatives: known descendants include Royalty and Bastardo Magarachsky, and there is a link with Traminer. Bastardo is sensitive to disease, so it needs care. It is one example of how the same variety gets different names and tastes depending on the place. It is in the list of grape varieties and belongs to fortified wines.
