The country's wine and winemaking: regions, grapes and appellations.

Belgian wine comes from a small country in Western Europe, where winemaking is less well known than beer. The climate is cool, but in recent decades there have been more vineyards. Wine is made in several parts of the country.

The three main zones are Wallonia in the south, Flanders in the north and the Meuse valley in the province of Limburg in the east. The name Maasvallei Limburg is protected as a separate place of origin. Grapes suited to a cool climate are grown here: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Müller-Thurgau and others.

A cool climate gives wines with high acidity, often light whites and sparkling wines made by the traditional method. Red wines are less common.

Production is small, and almost all the wine is drunk within the country, so it is hardly known abroad. Belgian wineries are often small, family-run and open to visitors. Belgian wine belongs to the circle of European wines.
