📍 Wallonia
The southern French-speaking part of the country.
Wallonia is the southern French-speaking part of Belgium. A small amount of wine is made here, mostly sparkling. The north of the country, Flanders, speaks Dutch, and the south speaks French.
The climate is cool, so fresh sparkling wines work best. They are sold as Crémant de Wallonie and as Wallonia quality sparkling wine. The main grapes are Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, plus the hybrid Solaris. There are also still wines, including those labelled "Vin de pays des jardins de Wallonie".
A special wine area of the region is Côtes de Sambre et Meuse. Vineyards here are small, and many estates are family-run.
Wallonia is part of Belgian wine together with Flanders. For Belgium this is a young wine country: production is growing, and the wines increasingly win awards and appear in restaurants.
