Grape variety ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 3

A white German grape crossed in 1883; it makes light, simple wines.

Müller-Thurgau is a white grape from Germany. It was created in 1882 at the institute in Geisenheim, Germany, by Hermann Müller, who came from the Swiss canton of Thurgau, hence the name. The variety is a crossing and quickly became popular.

Müller-Thurgau wine is light and soft, with a floral aroma and low acidity. It is simpler than Riesling and is usually meant to be drunk young. The vine ripens early and crops generously, so it was planted widely. It was once the most widely planted variety in Germany. It also grows well in Austria, Italy, Hungary and other cool regions.

Müller-Thurgau became the parent of many new varieties: Bacchus, Perle, Faberrebe, Würzer, Optima, Ortega, Pálava and others. It holds an important place among grape varieties as an example of successful breeding. The wine is served chilled with light food, fish and salads.
