🏰 Château Langoa-Barton
Also known as: Langoa Barton, Château Langoa Barton
A Saint-Julien estate bought in 1821 by Hugh Barton, of an Irish family of Bordeaux merchants, and owned by the Barton family ever since; a third growth of 1855.
Château Langoa-Barton is a wine estate in Saint-Julien, in the Médoc. According to the family, the dynasty began with Thomas Barton, who left Ireland, arrived in Bordeaux in 1725 and founded a wine-trading firm. Hugh Barton, who began his career as a wine merchant in 1786, bought Château Langoa in 1821, and since then the Barton family alone has owned it, together with Léoville Barton.
After the Second World War Ronald Barton restored the vineyards; in 1983 he handed the Saint-Julien estates to his nephew Anthony Barton, who has lived at Langoa since 1986. Today Lilian Barton Sartorius leads the châteaux and the family trading house, and the family also owns Château Mauvesin Barton in Moulis, acquired in 2011.
Saint-Julien is a protected designation of origin (PDO) for red wines made within a delimited area of the commune and its surroundings. In the 1855 classification, published on 18 April 1855 and kept today by the Conseil des Grands Crus Classés en 1855, Langoa Barton is a Troisième Cru (third growth).
