Wine house or estate ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 7 Updated:

An estate in the commune of Margaux in the Médoc, shaped by the Lestonnac family in the 16th century; owned by the Mentzelopoulos family since 1977; a first growth of 1855.

Château Margaux is a wine estate in the commune of Margaux, in the Médoc. According to the estate, in the 12th century the property was known as La Mothe de Margaux and had no vineyards yet; it took its present form with the Lestonnac family, and between 1572 and 1582 Pierre de Lestonnac restructured the property and its vines. The château itself was built from 1810 by the Bordeaux architect Louis Combes for the Marquis de La Colonilla.

In 1977 André Mentzelopoulos bought the estate; after his death in 1980 his daughter Corinne took over its direction. According to the estate, the domain covers 265 ha, with about 87 ha of red vines, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, and 12 ha of Sauvignon Blanc. Its wines are the Grand Vin, Pavillon Rouge, Pavillon Blanc and Margaux du Château Margaux.

Margaux is a protected designation of origin (PDO) for red wines made within a delimited area. In the 1855 classification, kept today by the Conseil des Grands Crus Classés en 1855, Château Margaux is one of the Premiers Crus of the Médoc.

Why it matters to you. The name of the commune, the appellation and the château are the same here: “Margaux” alone on a label means the PDO, not this estate. The WHO reminds: there is no safe level of alcohol.
