Château Léoville-Las Cases is a wine estate in Saint-Julien, in the Médoc. According to the estate, the old Léoville estate, one of the oldest vineyards of the Médoc, belonged to wealthy and influential noble families before passing to the Las Cases family. After the French Revolution it was divided between 1826 and 1840, and Léoville Las Cases received three fifths of it, including its historic core.
The same family has managed the property since the late 19th century; today Jean-Hubert Delon is its sole owner, and the family company also presents Clos du Marquis, Château Potensac and Château Nénin. According to the estate, the heart of the vineyard is a walled clos of about 55 ha stretching from the village of Saint-Julien to Château Latour, and this historic core has supplied the grand vin since the 17th century.
Saint-Julien is a protected designation of origin (PDO) for red wines made within a delimited area of the commune and its surroundings. In the 1855 classification, kept today by the Conseil des Grands Crus Classés en 1855, Léoville Las Cases is a Second Cru (second growth).
Why it matters to you. Several châteaux carry the name Léoville because one old estate was split; each is a separate property, so read the full name on the label. The WHO reminds: there is no safe level of alcohol.
