🫒 Cornicabra

Olive cultivar ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 1 Updated:

Spain's second cultivar by area: over 270,000 hectares, mostly in La Mancha (Ciudad Real, Toledo).

Cornicabra is a Spanish oil olive variety, the second in the country by area. It covers more than 270 thousand hectares, mostly in the provinces of Ciudad Real and Toledo, and also in Madrid, Badajoz and Cáceres.

The name means "goat's horn", because the fruit is strongly elongated and asymmetrical. In the villages the variety has dozens of other names, such as Cornal, Corneja and Cornezuelo, and it is often simply called "common" or "local".

Cornicabra flowers late, starts bearing late and ripens late. Its crop is high but uneven from year to year. The fruit holds tightly to the branches, so it is hard to harvest by machine. The variety is valued for its high oil yield and for the flavour and stability of the oil; its firm flesh is also used for table olives.

The tree is well suited to poor soils and to dry, cold places, just like the La Mancha plateau. Its weak points are olive knot, verticillium wilt, leaf spot and the olive fly.
