📍 Croatian Uplands
The hills around Zagreb.
Croatian Uplands (Central Hilly Croatia) is a wine region in the hills around Zagreb. The climate is continental: summers are warm, winters cold, and the slopes suit the vine well. The region lies in the north-western part of the country.
It is divided into several subregions: Moslavina, Prigorje-Bilogora, Plešivica, Pokuplje and Zagorje-Međimurje. Each has its own specialty. Plešivica is known for sparkling and fresh white wines. Local traditions are old, and many vineyards belong to small family farms. The hills are low, and vineyards often sit next to woods and villages.
White varieties dominate: Welschriesling, as well as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and others. Wines here are usually fresh, with good acidity. The Croatian Uplands are part of Croatian wine as one of its main regions alongside the coast. For visitors it is a chance to combine a trip to Zagreb with visits to wine cellars in the hills.
