🗺️ Croatian wine
The country's wine and winemaking: regions, grapes and appellations.
Croatian wine is the wine and winemaking of Croatia, a country in the Balkans on the Adriatic Sea. Croatia is divided into several wine areas: Slavonia and the Croatian Danube in the east, Central Hilly Croatia around Zagreb, Istria and Kvarner on the northern coast, and Dalmatia in the south. They are often grouped into two large regions: continental and coastal.
Many local grapes grow in the country. Whites include Pošip, Grk, Istrian Malvasia, Žlahtina and Vugava. Reds include Plavac Mali, Dobričić, Sušac and Crljenak Kaštelanski. On the Pelješac peninsula the famous red Dingač is made from Plavac Mali. It is also known that American Zinfandel comes from a Croatian variety.
The continental part gives fresh white wines, while on the coast wines are more powerful and warmer. The coastal climate is Mediterranean and the eastern one is continental.
Croatian wine belongs to the wines of Europe. The country is small and much of the wine is drunk locally, so it is harder to find abroad. Alcohol is for adults.
