๐ Welschriesling
A white wine grape of Central Europe, unrelated to true Riesling.
Welschriesling is a white grape variety of Central Europe. Despite the name, it is not related to true Riesling. The word "Welsch" in the name means "Romance-speaking, foreign", not Italian origin. The variety grows in many countries of the region.
It is grown in Austria (Styria, Burgenland, Lower Austria), Croatia (Slavonia, Danube area), Hungary (Balaton, Eger, Mรกtra, Nagy-Somlรณ), Slovakia (Little Carpathians, Nitra), Slovenia, Romania and the Czech Republic (Moravia). The wine is light and fresh, with bright acidity and aromas of apple and flowers. It suits both table wines and sparkling wines.
Sweet wines are also made from Welschriesling. In Burgenland by Lake Neusiedl noble rot develops on the berries, giving sweet wine, including "Ruster Ausbruch". The variety is in the list of grape varieties. Welschriesling is a parent of Goldburger, a cross with Orangetraube. It is rare in Italy, and earned its reputation in the lands of the former Habsburg empire.
