🍷 Flute bottle (Hock)
A tall, narrow bottle for white wines from the Rhine and Alsace.
The Rhine bottle, or hock bottle, is a tall, narrow bottle that tapers gently to the neck. It is also called a flute because of its shape. White wines of the Rhine and Alsace are bottled in it, as well as Mosel wines. Bottles of green glass are traditional for the Mosel, and of brown glass for the Rhine.
The shape has long been known. It arose in Germany and became one of the “classic” wine bottle shapes, alongside the Bordeaux bottle, which has shoulders, and the Burgundy bottle, with sloping sides. Bottles of different shapes let you tell from a distance what style of wine is inside. Alsace also bottles its wine in flutes.
Such a bottle is most often seen with Riesling. Riesling is very popular in Germany and Alsace, and it is traditionally sold in tall bottles. But other grapes are also bottled in flutes, such as Gewürztraminer, Sylvaner and Pinot Gris.
The Rhine bottle is one of the wine bottles. Its shape does not affect taste; it is more a matter of tradition and recognition. Alcohol is for adults.
