🍇 Gewürztraminer

Grape variety ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 3

A pink-skinned aromatic grape smelling of rose and lychee, known for the wines of Alsace.

Gewürztraminer is a pink-skinned aromatic grape. Its wines are recognised at once: they smell of rose, lychee, flower petals and spices. The German word "Gewürz" means "spice". The variety is considered to be of German origin and is linked to Traminer, an old variety named after the town of Tramin in South Tyrol.

Gewürztraminer is most famous in Alsace, France, where it gives dry and sweet white wines. It also grows in the German Pfalz, in Alto Adige in northern Italy and in Moldova. The wines are oily in texture, with low acidity and noticeable alcohol.

The variety matters in breeding: Siegerrebe, Perle and several other varieties descend from it and its close forms. The wines are served with Asian food, spicy dishes and soft cheeses. Alsace has many grand crus made famous precisely by Gewürztraminer, for example Furstentum and Goldert. Because of its bright smells it is easy to recognise even in a blind tasting.
