📜 Gavi / Cortese di Gavi
A well-known white wine of Piedmont made from Cortese around the town of Gavi.
Gavi, or Cortese di Gavi, is a well-known white wine of Piedmont in north-western Italy. It is made from the Cortese grape around the small town of Gavi. It is a protected appellation. The wine is still, though a sparkling version is also made.
Cortese gives a dry, fresh wine with high acidity and notes of green apple, citrus and almond. The body is medium, the taste clean and light. The vineyards lie on hills with limestone-clay soils. The wine is best drunk young and chilled, as an aperitif or with fish, seafood and light pasta. It does not like long barrel ageing, so it is usually kept in steel tanks.
Gavi counts as Italian wine and as a white wine of Piedmont, where reds such as Barolo are better known. It is a good example of a fresh white from northern Italy. The label sometimes shows a village or plot name. There are also more aged versions that gain complexity with the years.
