🗺️ Italian wine

Wine country ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 1

The country's wine and winemaking: regions, grape varieties, appellations.

Italian wine means the wine and winemaking of Italy, one of the largest wine countries in the world. Grapes grow almost everywhere here, from the Alps in the north to Sicily in the south. Italian viticulture goes back thousands of years, and the country has a great many grape varieties.

Italy is divided into 20 wine regions, including Piedmont, Tuscany, Veneto, Sicily and Puglia. Each region has its own wines and traditions. In Piedmont these are Barolo and Barbaresco, in Tuscany Chianti and Brunello, in Veneto Valpolicella and Prosecco. Widely known grapes include Sangiovese, Trebbiano, Dolcetto, Verdicchio, Catarratto and Grillo.

Italian wines are divided into categories: DOCG, DOC and IGT. The top step is DOCG, with the strictest rules and checks. Each area has wines for every taste: dry and sweet, still and sparkling, red and white. Italian wine belongs to the wines of Europe and is closely tied to the cooking of the country.
