📍 Geneva
The third-largest wine canton, with 22 premiers crus.
Geneva is a wine canton in Switzerland. By vineyard area it is third among the Swiss cantons. Here 22 premiers crus are recognised, separate names that belong to a higher level.
The vineyards lie around the city of Geneva, by the lake of the same name, on the border with France. The lake softens the climate. The canton is divided into three zones: Mandement, Between Arve and Rhône, and Between Arve and Lake. The main grapes are Gamay and Pinot Noir among reds, Chasselas and Chardonnay among whites. The local grape Gamaret is widely planted too.
As in other parts of Switzerland, Geneva wines are made in relatively small batches and mostly drunk inside the country. Switzerland exports little of its wine.
Geneva is one of the Swiss wine regions, next to Vaud and Valais. These wines show that Swiss winemaking is varied in its own way.
