🍇 Gamay
A red wine grape used to make Beaujolais.
Gamay is a red wine grape from which Beaujolais is made. It comes from France, from Burgundy, but today it is most closely tied to the Beaujolais area to the south. Gamay arose as a cross between Pinot Noir and Gouais Blanc, an old white variety.
Gamay wine is light and fruity, smelling of strawberry, cherry and banana, with low tannins and bright acidity. It is drunk young and slightly chilled. For Beaujolais a special technique is used, carbonic maceration, where whole bunches ferment under a blanket of carbon dioxide. This makes the wine soft and aromatic.
The best sites of Beaujolais are called crus: Fleurie, Juliénas, Saint-Amour, Moulin-à-Vent and others. They give more serious wines that can keep. Gamay also grows on the Loire, in Touraine, and in other areas, and goes into rosé. The grape is often underestimated, but it shows that a light wine can also be refined.
