The cool north-east of the country, where the main grape is Pinot Noir.

German-speaking Switzerland is the north-east and centre of the country, where German is spoken. It is one of the wine parts of Switzerland, with a cooler climate than the western and southern areas. Vineyards lie by lakes and along river valleys. The main cantons are Graubünden, Zurich, Schaffhausen, Aargau and Thurgau. The best-known area is the Bündner Herrschaft in Graubünden with the villages of Fläsch, Maienfeld, Jenins and Malans. Here lies the main share of the vineyards. There is also wine in St. Gallen, Basel, Bern (by Lake Thun) and other cantons. The main grape is Pinot Noir, called Blauburgunder here. Among whites Pinot Gris and Completer, special to Graubünden, are grown. Müller-Thurgau is also often found. The wines are fresh with clean acidity, and the reds are light and aromatic. Production is small, and almost all the wine is drunk in Switzerland itself, so it is little known abroad. Swiss wine belongs to the wines of Europe, but not to the European Union.
