The country's wine and winemaking: regions, grapes and appellations.

Swiss wine is the wine and winemaking of Switzerland, a small mountain country in the centre of Europe. Vineyards lie on slopes by lakes and along rivers. The main areas are Valais, Vaud, Geneva, Three Lakes, German-speaking Switzerland and Ticino in the south.

The main white grape is Chasselas, followed by Pinot Noir and Gamay. Merlot grows in Ticino. There are many local varieties: Petite Arvine, Amigne, Cabaret Noir, Diolinoir, Cabernet Blanc and others. Many wines are white, light and delicate.

The slopes are very steep, and vineyards often stand on terraces, as in Lavaux on Lake Geneva. The work is manual and costly. Production is small, so most Swiss wine is drunk in the country itself and little reaches other countries.

Swiss wine belongs to the wines of Europe. The country is multilingual, and the wines show it: the French-speaking west, German-speaking Switzerland and Italian-speaking Ticino have different styles. Alcohol is for adults.
