🥃 Lowland whisky

Protected spirit name ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 6 Updated:

Protected region of Scotch whisky in southern Scotland, below the legal Highland–Lowland boundary; the SWA’s 2024 map shows 23 distilleries.

Lowland whisky is Scotch distilled in the protected region of Lowland, that is, in the part of Scotland south of the boundary between the Highland and Lowland regions. Under the Scotch Whisky Regulations 2009, the name Lowland may be used on a label, packaging or in advertising only for genuine Scotch distilled in this region.

The boundary is the same as for Highland: from the North Channel along the Firth of Clyde to Greenock, through the Campsie Hills and the Wallace Monument, along the B998 and A91 roads, the M90 motorway and the River Earn to the Firth of Tay and the North Sea. The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) shows it in simplified form as a line between Dundee and Greenock.

On the SWA’s 2024 map the region has 23 malt distilleries, among them Auchentoshan, Glenkinchie, Bladnoch, Annandale, Daftmill and Lindores Abbey. The SWA notes that many new distilleries have opened here over the past decade and that Lowland whiskies are very varied.

Geographically, Scotland is divided into Highland and Lowland by the Highland Boundary Fault: about 60% of the country’s area lies to the north and west of it. The Scotch Whisky technical file explains that the east of Scotland is drier and suitable for growing barley and wheat.

Why this matters to you. “Lowland” on a label guarantees distillation in southern Scotland, but not a particular taste — the region is varied. The name stands directly before the category, for example “Lowland Single Malt Scotch Whisky”. The remaining rules are the same as for all Scotch: at least three years in oak, 40% ABV or more. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe dose of alcohol.

Frequently asked questions

Is it true that Lowland whisky is always light?

The primary sources do not confirm this. The Scotch Whisky Association calls the region’s whiskies varied, and the law defines Lowland only by the place of distillation, with no requirements on taste.

Where is the boundary of the Lowland region?

It is the south of Scotland from the line described in regulation 10(7): the North Channel, the Firth of Clyde to Greenock, the Campsie Hills, the Wallace Monument, the B998 and A91 roads, the M90 motorway, the River Earn and the Firth of Tay.

How many distilleries are there in Lowland?

On the SWA’s 2024 map there are 23 malt distilleries. The SWA notes that their number in the region has grown markedly over the last ten years.

Can a whisky be called “Lowland” if it was only matured in the south?

No. The region’s name depends only on where the whisky was distilled. Any Scotch may be matured anywhere in Scotland, and that gives no right to a regional name.

Can the word Lowland be used in a trade mark?

Only as an exception: if the mark or company name was registered before 1 September 2009 and the region is mentioned only as part of it, or if it is part of the producer’s address. In all other cases the whisky must have been distilled in Lowland.
