🥃 Single Malt Welsh Whisky

Protected spirit name ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 4 Updated:

Protected name since 2023: whisky from 100% malted barley and Welsh water from a single distillery in Wales, aged there for at least 3 years.

Single Malt Welsh Whisky (Welsh: Wisgi Cymreig Brag Sengl) is whisky made from 100% malted barley, Welsh water and yeast, distilled at a single distillery in Wales, aged there for at least three years in wooden casks and bottled in Wales. Since 24 July 2023 it has been a UK geographical indication, with a strength of at least 40% ABV.

Mashing, fermentation, distillation and ageing must all take place in Wales; the barley may be malted elsewhere. All the water must come from sources in Wales. Distillation is by batch: in one still with or without a column, or in a pair of pot stills; the Penderyn distillery, for example, uses a Faraday still. Casks may be new, used or refurbished, including ex-Madeira, sherry, port or bourbon casks, and taking the whisky out of Wales for further ageing is prohibited.

The first commercial distillery in Wales appeared in 1887, and in 1889 the Welsh Whisky Distillery Company was founded at Frongoch near Bala. Because of a strong temperance movement it did not last long: it was sold in 1900 and wound up in 1910. More than a hundred years later, in 2000, the Penderyn distillery carried out the first distillation, and its whisky went on sale on 1 March 2004.

The application was filed by the Welsh Whisky Association, which then had five distilleries. In 2026 the government rejected a “standard” amendment it proposed, which would have required mashing and fermentation at the same distillery where the spirit is distilled: that would have restricted access to the name, so such a change can be submitted only as a non-standard one.

Why this matters to you. The name guarantees a single Welsh distillery, malted barley only, and ageing and bottling in Wales. Unlike Scotch, the casks need not be oak. Welsh barley is not required; it is used mainly by small distilleries. WHO reminds: there is no safe dose of alcohol.

Frequently asked questions

Is it true that Welsh whisky must be made from Welsh barley?

No. The specification requires only barley (100% malted); Welsh origin is required for the water. Local barley is used mainly by small distilleries to emphasise provenance.

Where is Single Malt Welsh Whisky bottled?

Only in Wales. Mashing, fermentation, distillation and at least three years of ageing must also take place there; the barley may be malted outside Wales.

How does it differ from single malt Scotch?

Both are single-distillery whiskies made from 100% malted barley. But Welsh whisky may be aged in casks of any wood, while Scotch must be aged in oak only; in Wales distillation in a still with a column is also permitted.

When did the name become protected?

The application was filed on 12 August 2021, and on 24 July 2023 the name was entered in the UK register of geographical indications for spirit drinks.

When did Wales start making whisky again?

After a break of more than a century: the Penderyn distillery carried out its first distillation in 2000, and the first whisky went on sale on 1 March 2004. The previous distillery at Frongoch ceased to exist in 1910.
