🥃 English Whisky
Protected UK name from 1 October 2026: whisky from British grain and English water, distilled and aged in England.
English Whisky (also written English Whiskey) is whisky made from British grain and local English water, mashed, fermented and distilled, then aged for at least three years in wooden casks of up to 700 L, all in England only. From 1 October 2026 it is a registered UK geographical indication, with a finished strength of at least 40% ABV.
The application was filed by the English Whisky Guild on 11 February 2022, and the specification was published on 19 February 2025. Seven objections were received, the main one concerning the mandatory copper stills. So the final text requires not an all-copper still but “sufficient contact with copper” along the vapour path. Compliance is checked by the tax authority HMRC.
The rules are close to the Scottish ones: distillation below 94.8% ABV, saccharification by malt enzymes, fermentation by yeast, and no added alcohol, sweeteners or flavourings. Only water and plain caramel colouring E150a are allowed. Casks are wooden, for example oak; removing whisky from England in casks for ageing is prohibited, while bottling may take place outside it.
The label must state a sub-category. Malt English Whisky is made only from malted barley, with batch distillation at least twice, at least once in a pot still; if the casks are not oak, the type of wood must appear on the front label. Grain English Whisky is made from other cereals in pot or column stills. “Single” means one distillery, “Blended” means several. The words “Pure Malt” are banned. Modern production revived in 2003, and by the end of 2023 at least 46 distilleries were laying down whisky.
Why this matters to you. “English Whisky” guarantees English distillation and ageing of at least three years, but not English grain and not bottling in England. The age on the label is the age of the youngest whisky, in years only. A dark colour does not prove long ageing: caramel is permitted. WHO reminds: there is no safe dose of alcohol.

Frequently asked questions
Since when has the name “English Whisky” been protected?
Since 1 October 2026, when it was entered in the UK register of geographical indications for spirit drinks. The registration decision was published on 11 September 2026; the protection applies in the United Kingdom.
Is it true that English whisky must be made from English barley?
No. The specification requires grain from Great Britain: some distilleries stand near the Scottish border, and maltings do not separate grain batches. The water must be English, and mashing, fermentation, distillation and ageing must take place in England only.
How does Malt English Whisky differ from Grain English Whisky?
Malt is made only from 100% malted barley, with batch distillation at least twice, at least once in a pot still where the vapour contacts copper. Grain is made from other cereals or from unmalted grain, distilled in pot or column stills.
Can English whisky be bottled outside England?
Yes, once ageing is complete, provided the whisky is transported in inert containers. Colouring with caramel must take place in England, and removing casks for ageing elsewhere is prohibited.
What does the age on an English whisky label mean?
The age of the youngest spirit component in the bottle, in years only. The year of distillation may be stated only if all the whisky was distilled in that year and the year of bottling or the age is given alongside.
