🍷 ISO tasting glass
A small standard glass, the same for every tasting.
The ISO tasting glass is a small standard glass for judging wine. Its shape and size are set by an international ISO standard, so such a glass looks the same everywhere. Its capacity is about 215 millilitres, and only a little is poured, around 50 millilitres.
The glass is tulip-shaped: wide at the bottom and narrowing toward the top. This shape gathers aroma and directs it to the nose. The glass is thin, clear and smooth so the colour of the wine can be seen well. It stands on a stem, which is held so that the hand does not warm the wine.
It is used at professional tastings and competitions, where many wines must be compared under the same conditions. It is not needed for an ordinary meal at home. But it helps to understand how wine tasting works and why glasses get such a shape. Experts taste wine rather than drink it, and spit it out afterwards.
