🍷 Red wine glass

Tableware ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 1 Updated:

A large, wide glass that lets the wine "breathe".

A red wine glass is a wide, large glass with a roomy bowl. It lets the wine "breathe": a large surface meets the air, and the aroma opens better. Red wines are dense and aromatic and need more space than whites.

The bowl is usually wider and taller than that of a white wine glass. Wine is poured to about a third. This leaves room for air and for the aroma that gathers above the surface. The glass is held by the stem, so the hand does not warm the wine or leave marks on the bowl.

There are different shapes. The Burgundy glass is especially rounded: a wide bowl gathers the delicate aromas of Pinot Noir. The Bordeaux glass is taller, for dense Cabernet and Merlot. All of them belong to wine glasses in general. Shape affects perception but is not essential: the taste of the wine matters more than the glassware. You can drink red wine from an ordinary glass as long as it is clean and free of smells.
