📜 La Romanée
France's smallest appellation, a tiny red grand cru in Vosne-Romanée.
La Romanée is France's smallest appellation. It is a tiny red grand cru in the village of Vosne-Romanée in the Côte de Nuits, Burgundy. The name is protected as a PDO.
The site covers less than one hectare. Only Pinot Noir grows on it. All the wines are red and still. The site belongs to a single owner, which is why it is called a monopole. It lies above its famous neighbour, the Romanée-Conti vineyard, on a sun-facing slope. The soils are limestone and the vines are old.
The wine is produced in small lots: few bottles, hard to buy. La Romanée is counted among the most expensive wines of Burgundy. Although the plot is small, it is very well known to wine experts. Its position near the top of the hill is thought to give the wine elegance and complexity. Because of such small volume, La Romanée is found more often in collections and at auctions than on an ordinary table. For experts it is an example of how much the exact place matters in Burgundy.
