📜 Charmes-Chambertin
The largest grand cru of Gevrey-Chambertin, red wines from Pinot Noir.
Charmes-Chambertin is a red grand cru wine from Burgundy in France. It is the largest grand cru of Gevrey-Chambertin in the Côte de Nuits. The wine is made from Pinot Noir. The appellation is protected (PDO).
The vineyard lies on a gentle slope, with limestone and clay soil. Charmes-Chambertin wines are usually softer and more aromatic than some of their neighbours, smelling of cherry, raspberry and spices, with silky tannins. They are less severe in youth, but open up more deeply with age.
Nearby lie other grand crus with names beginning with Chambertin. Together they form the pride of Gevrey-Chambertin. Wines of this level are expensive, and are bought for special occasions or for a collection. They are served with game, duck, beef and soft cheeses. Charmes-Chambertin is a good example of the Burgundy approach, where place matters. The site is large compared with its neighbours, so more bottles are produced than for many other grands crus.
