📜 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze
One of Burgundy's most famous red grands crus, in the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin.
Chambertin-Clos de Bèze is one of the best-known red grands crus of Burgundy. The vineyard is in the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin, in the Côte de Nuits. The name is protected as a geographical indication of the European Union and is listed in the eAmbrosia register.
The word clos means a walled plot. The wine is made from Pinot Noir, like all red wines of this part of Burgundy. It is still, meaning without bubbles. The vineyard has a very high reputation: the wines are known for density, structure and the ability to age for many years.
Grand cru is the top level of Burgundy vineyards. Gevrey-Chambertin has several such plots, standing close together: Chambertin, Charmes-Chambertin, Mazoyères-Chambertin and others. Chambertin-Clos de Bèze borders Chambertin itself.
Wines of this name are rare, because the vineyard is not large. As in Burgundy in general, the producer matters as much as the name. So the quality of bottles under one name can differ noticeably.
